Best update so far for the Sky+ app , I'm loving the ability to browse On Demand including catchup (BBC currently not included) , I also love how search now includes On Demand also.

This is an excellent update, I like how it breaks things down into sections like 'last chance' etc. The ability to download on demand content directly to your Sky box from the app is also a huge positive! :)

How many extra minutes can I add to the end of a recording on SKY+ ? Sometimes boxing on Boxnation can over-run by 30 minutes or more. Recording the next show is not an option as more often than not the next thing to show on the EPG is that the channel is now closed until 10am, which you can't record.

Max is 10 mins. As Sky have a Dynamic EPG then it should automatically record if runs over but im sure MM will correct me if im wrong

Oh and another question. How much downloaded Anytime+ content can my 1tb box hold?

Also how long does a 1 hour SD programme and a 1 hour HD programme take to download on a 10mb connection? How much of the show % wise has to be downloaded before I can start watching.

Cheers

Sadly Boxnation isn't covered by SKY's dynamic EPG. Apparently, according to posts on their fAcebook and Twitter pages, it costs money to have your channel covered by the dynamic EPG. Money that Boxnation are not prepared to pay.

A HD movie on a 10mb connection will become available in under 15 seconds , your line should do more than 10mb.

1TB

Re Boxnation you can also quite easily manually record a show

The 500gb is split 250gb for personal with the other 250gb for Showcase downloads , you can record upto 60hrs HD content owing to the fact Sky use Mpeg4.

My install came with the 2TB box. Recorded/downloaded about 10 things so far, some of which are HD 1 hour long documentaries and it still says I have 99% space free.

You could always open that bad boy up & pop in a 1tb or 2tb drive!
Depending on how we go with our sub & how much space we do use I can see us doing that rather than pay a stupid amount to Sky.

I just watched the how to video on this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blarZdkztdQ

I'm not 100% sure it's something I'd like to attempt personally. I've got a small computer repair shop where I live. I'm sure they do a 1.5Tb hard drive for around £50.00. I wonder if they'd do the job for me. Would mind paying around £25.00 for the job to be done.

I have noticed posts from people on other forums that they've upgraded their drive but have found a few niggles creeping in. As the drive fills up their EPG becomes incredibly slow when they try to set new recordings.

Told the box I wanted to watch all the game of thrones yesterday. Saw it started downloading the first episode straight away so gave me the option of playing it instantly but then didn't start downloading the other episodes. Didn't watch that first episode last night anyway.

This morning checked the TBB graph for the sky connection and saw a small bump after I went to bed. Guessed it was the downloading the episodes while I slept so had a look on the sky box and they were all downloaded. Smart that it did the 25gb of downloading at that time :) 96% free space left.

Can someone tell me why ,since sky moved all the HD channels around that some programs appear to be in the wrong aspect ratio .Some programs fill my screen and some have the black border down the sides .This didn't happen at all before Sky buggered up the channel listing .

If they are showing 4:3 content on an HD or other widescreen channel, it is probably correct that bars are added down the sides. The alternatives are to zoom the picture, chopping off the top and/or bottom, or to stretch the picture horizontally, resulting in the wrong aspect ratio.

Post a screenshot if you still think it is wrong, preferably of a programme that is frequently repeated so we can compare. (I doubt is is anything to do with a channel lineup change, by the way. Just coincidence).

4:3 content shown on a HD channel will always be in the correct aspect ratio i.e with black bars at the sides.

4:3 content shown on a SD channel, Gold for example, will be stretched to fill the screen (fat-o-vision)

It seems to be a matter of personal choice, for some it is a crises if the picture does not fill the screen? For myself I like everything in it's original aspect ratio so when the picture is streched I adjust it to 4:3 or maybe 14:9 using my TV's remote as opposed to the Sky remote.

I am sure it is possible to adjust the TV's AR using the Sky remote but I just cannot be bothered to fiddle about with it. Off the top of my head:- Pressing TV followed by Red or maybe Blue might do the trick.

Ah...

Thanks for the clarification - I feel exactly the same way; my supplier is only as good as its last month's service.

Couldn't agree more , cost , reliability and service the company is pretty irrelevant

Brilliant news.

When the regional BBC One HD channels launch, will all be carried by SKY? Will I be able to access BBC One Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales?

Rumours on DS forum that the BBC new HD channels are set to launch on January 7th or January 14th?

And yet only 40% of sky customers take hd. I wonder if they would double the number taking it if they dropped the price to 7.50 or a fiver?

Maybe. The way i see it thou if you drop the price then the number of HD channels coming will be reduced as wont have as much money. I really would love to see the the price of the HD pack reduced or gone completely but i dont see if

Its annual growth from Sep 11 - Sep 12 was 543,000 which is pretty decent performance.

I'd like to see them possibly start to reduce it for Sky World subscribers , it could also help with the take up of premium channels.

I agree. Would be a good incentive for them to get more customers on Sky World

Re: General Sky TV Discussion

SKY HD has been a real success story. It has seen nothing but continual growth since being introduced by SKY. Currently there is no real good reason for SKY to drop the price. Once growth slows, or stops completely, that's when they could consider a change in pricing structure.

4,468,000 customers paying £10.25 per month for HD is raking in almost £46 million each month alone.

Ofcom recently suggested 70% of UK households are HD ready. There are estimated to be 24.3 million households in the UK. On this basis there are 17,010,000 households ready to receive HD in the UK. What this all means is 26% of households in the UK who can receive HD, choose SKY as their HD provider. A quarter of the population who can watch HD are consuming it via SKY for £10.25 per month. I think it's incredible. It also shows there is still a huge untapped market for the likes of SKY and Virgin to get their teeth into.

Out of interest how many Virgin customers have the XL package, and how many pay the extra £7.00 for SKY Sports and Movies HD?

Re: General Sky TV Discussion

Interesting points Chad , Sky seem to have adopted the stance of making the HD pack better value rather than reducing or doing away with the charge , don't forget the HD pack very often includes a free box for new customers or those upgrading it also offers Sky Sports F1 in HD without the need to subscribe to Sky Sports , the largest selection of HD channels in the UK with more being added all the time.

We signed up to sky a few weeks ago. We chose the entertainment plus package and my wife asked me if it would be worth it to pay the extra £10.25 and without a break in the conversation I said yes.
For me why have all the best in technology but watch in sd?
On top of that I get f1 a major bonus :)

Got to agree. I recently upgraded my TV from 32 inch to 47 inch. This exposed how terrible the picture quality can be on some non HD channels. This was one of the motivating factors in me leaving Virgin for SKY.

It's not going to be long until SKY hit 70 HD channels, well worth £10.25 per month if you ask me. Anyone who suggests they see no difference between SD and HD is either lying, kidding themselves on or need their eyes tested.

or are sitting far enough from the screen to be unable to see the difference, or aren't actually watching HD at all. A lot of people have both SCART and HDMI plugged in, and the SCART takes priority when they turn the TV on.

In which case I'd recommend a larger TV :D

A maximum 32 inch TV is all that fits in in our sitting room as anything bigger would look absolutely stupid.:)

Or they simply don't think its significant enough to pay an extra tenner for?

I don't really understand this philosophy. If you've spent hundreds if not thousands on a HD/3D TV why would you not want the picture to look as nice as possible.

Surely HD is the reason most people upgrade their TVs these days. If people have no intention of watching HD then why get a HD TV?

isn't hd the norm for any tv you buy? Can you still buy a tv without HD?

Even so, they may well buy for dvds, not tv.

And finally cost, £10 per month might be out of reach, time you have subscribed to other things. And I only think sport is necessary, otherwise I would drop it. Movies etc are fine in standard (and how i record them, to save space)

I agree with all the points here about the Sky HD charge. The range and choice of HD channels is well worth the £10.25 a month

Some might call it value but HD now should be seen as standard and not as some extra add on charge.:nono:

If you buy a movie on Blu Ray its more expensive than DVD , if you purchase a PPV movie in HD through Virgin Movies or Sky Store its generally a pound dearer so whether we agree with it or not most companies profit from HD , I personally would much sooner pay the fee and be assured we get the latest HD channels from launch rather than waiting years for them to arrive but that's personal preference.

But the thing is MM nearly everything is done in HD now so why should people have to pay a extra premium to get access to it.

That is something you would have to ask the companies , as I say all companies profit from it whether we agree or not.

Correct we are not, well i hope not anyway. My point is yes everything or nearly everything is in HD but HD is still expensive to make and broadcast and until it becomes more affordable to everyone then it will be a premium

Far from it. See table 2.17 here.

Also, only 59% of HD-ready TV owners have an HD source available.
